Ich bin vergnügt, will ich was mehr?
Will ich der König seyn?
Wär' ich was bessers, wenn ichs wär'?
Ich glaube? glaube ? Nein!

Der König runzelt seine Stirn
Im Cabinet, und schmält
Wenn's seinen Räthen an Gehirn
In ihren Köpfen fehlt.

Und ist's denn so ein grosses Glück,
Wenn er vom Pferde sieht
Mit seinem Adlerscharfen Blick
Wo's fehlt ins dritte Glied?

Was alle Bösen Böses thun
Im ganzen Lande, liegt
Auf seiner Schulter; kann er ruhn?
Macht strafen ihn vergnügt?

Und nach der Arbeit Ruh', ist doch
Der Arbeit bester Lohn;
Ich mag es nicht das Sclaven-Joch
Geknüpft an eine Kron!

Als König hat er nichts als Schein,
Und hat er was als Held?
Ich wollte ja nicht König seyn
Um alles auf der Welt.

Is koning zijn oké?
Zou ’t mij bevallen, was ik heer?
Ik denk van, denk van nee.
 
De koning fronst zich ’t wijze hoofd
In ’t kabinet, en schrikt
Als hij zijn raden ziet beroofd
Van geest, welhaast getikt.
 
En is het dan zo’n groot geluk
Als hij, te paard, bemerkt,
Rondspiedend met zijn ad’laarsblik,
Dat één gelid niet werkt?
 
Al wat door prutsers wordt verprutst
In ’t hele land, legt druk
Hem op de schouders; kent hij rust?
Geeft straffen hem geluk?
 
Rust na het werken is geluk,
Voor arbeid ’t beste loon;
Het lijkt mij niets, het slavenjuk
Gekoppeld aan een kroon!
 
Des konings pracht is niets dan schijn,
En heeft hij iets als held?
Ik zou geen koning willen zijn,
Voor al der wereld geld!
