Wer ist groß?
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT ENG FRE
Wer ist wohl groß?
Der eine Welt im Kopfe trägt,
In der kein Herz dem Träger schlägt?
Der stürmisch von dem Throne schaut,
Den Mord und Herrschsucht ihm erbaut:
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Der auf gethürmten Leichen geht,
Und Freundschaft heuchelnd Zwietracht sä't?
Der, wenn ein Kronenraub ihm glückt,
Sich selbst damit den Scheitel schmückt!
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Der drohend mit dem Glücksstern prahlt,
Der ihn und sein Genie umstrahlt!
Der sich von Nord, Süd, Ost, und West
Im Leben noch vergöttern läßt?
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Dem nur der Nahm': "Der Helden Held,"
Nicht der des Vaters wohlgefällt?
Dem jedes Volk ein Spielball ist,
Das ihn aus Zwang als Sieger grüßt?
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Der weder sich noch And're liebt,
Vom Frieden spricht, und nie ihn gibt?
Der keinen Freund der Wahrheit schont,
Selbst Lügen schmiedet, Lügen lohnt?
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Der Fürsten von den Völkern trennt,
Und sich den Weltbeglücker nennt,
Und ungescheut mit frechem Schritt
Der Kirche Richterstuhl zertritt?
Ist der wohl groß?

Wer ist denn groß?
Der, stets das Blutschwert in der Hand,
Die Freyheit in den Himmel bannt?
Der bloß auf seine Lust bedacht,
Die Erde uns zur Hölle macht?
Ist der wohl groß?

Nein! der ist groß,
Der für das Heil der Menscheit lebt,
Ein Feind des Kriegs, nach Frieden strebt,
Dem, wenn man ihn zum Kriege zwingt,
Sich jeder gern zum Opfer bringt,
Ja, der ist groß!

Ja der ist groß,
Der im Gefühl der Herrscherpflicht
Stets redlich handelt, offen spricht,
Den, auch vom Unglück hart bedrängt,
Der Völker Jubel froh empfängt:
Ha der ist groß!

Ja der ist groß,
Den Jung und Alt, den Weib und Mann,
Kurz, Alles, was nur athmen kann,
Mit einer Stimme, einem Geist,
Als liebevollen Vater preist,
O der ist groß!

Ja der ist groß,
Der nicht erbost nach Rache schnaubt,
Wenn Meineid ihm sein Erbe raubt;
Der selbst dem Todfeind gern verzeiht,
Und ihm sein höchstes Kleinod freyt:
Ha der ist groß!

Ja, der ist groß,
Der, glorreich siegend, nicht vergißt,
Was Völkerrecht und Freyheit ist,
Der dieß Gemeingut nie verletzt,
Und Palmen mehr als Lorbeer schätzt -
Ja der ist groß.

Ja der ist groß,
Um den als Schutzwehr Freund und Feind
Sich frey zum Eintrachtsbund vereint,
Der gläubig an den höchsten Geist
Die Welt dem Sclavenjoch entreißt:
O der ist groß!

Ich nenn' ihn nicht -
Ihn nennt ja die Geschichte schon:
Die Völkerliebe bleibt sein Thron;
Von ihm aus strahlt in hehrem Glanz
Der Bundesfürsten Siegeskranz.
Ja, er ist groß!

Who is great?
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Who is great?
Someone who carries a world in their head,
And who never feels the beating of a heart?
Who looks out tempestuously from the throne
Constructed for him by murder and power?
Is it he that is great?

So who is great?
Someone who walks over piles of corpses,
And who, pretending friendship sows discord?
Someone who, when he feels like stealing a crown,
Adorns his own head with it!
Is such a person great?

So who is great?
Someone who threatens and brags with the star of fate
Which glows around him and his genius,
Someone who allows people in the North, South, East and West
To treat him as divine while he is still alive?
Is it he that is great?

So who is great?
Someone who only likes the name 'Hero of heroes'
And is not satisfied with his father's name?
Someone for whom each group of people is a football,
Being forced to greet him as victor?
Is it he that is great?

So who is great?
Someone who loves neither himself nor anyone else,
Who speaks of peace but never grants it?
Someone who never offers the truth to a friend,
Who forges lies for himself and pays out in lies?
Is it he that is great?

So who is great?
Someone who separates princes from their people,
And calls himself the bringer of happiness to the world,
And shamelessly and impudently
Crushes underfoot the church's judgement seat?
Is it he that is great?

So who is great?
Someone who, with a bloody sword always in his hand,
Drives freedom away to heaven?
Someone who, just because he wants to do so,
Turns the earth into hell?
Is it he that is great?

No! The person who is great
Is the one that lives for the benefit of humanity,
An enemy of war, someone who strives for peace,
Someone who, when forced to fight a war,
Willingly offers himself as a sacrifice.
Yes, that is someone who is great!

Yes, someone who is great is someone
Who feels bound by the duty of being a leader and
Always acts honestly, speaks openly,
Someone who, even in the face of misfortune,
Happily receives the acclamation of the people,
Oh, that is someone who is great!

Yes, someone who is great is someone
Who can be valued by young and old, women and men,
In short, all that have breath,
With a single voice, with a single spirit,
They can value him as a loving father,
Oh, he is great!

Yes, someone who is great is someone
Who does not get infuriated by vengeance
If perjury robs him of his inheritance;
Someone who willingly forgives his mortal enemy,
And offers him his greatest jewel;
Oh, that is someone who is great!

Yes, someone who is great is someone
Who, gloriously victorious, does not forget
What human rights and freedom are,
Who never damages this common property,
And who values palms more than laurels -
Yes, that is someone who is great.

Yes, someone who is great is someone
Who is both a friend and enemy of defensive weapons,
Who willingly enters into alliances,
Who believing in the highest spirit,
Frees the world from the yoke of slavery:
Oh, that is someone who is great!

I will not name him -
For History has already named him:
The love of his people remains his throne;
Streaming out from him there is the majestic glow
Of the victory wreath of the allied princes.
Yes, he is great!
