I went out into the green fields Into the bright sunshine, And gazed quite merrily upon the world And upon all its radiance. Suddenly there stood before me A maiden, wondrously lovely, Who from a web of golden locks Gazed forth with clear eyes. And as once the world outside me Had beckoned with radiance and brilliancy, Thus with a single glance of hers It took possession of my heart. And within [my heart] it is now Marvellously wild and joyful, And pain and gaiety are conjoined And peace -- strife -- and rest. Now I never go out into the fields In radiance and sunshine -- Within me -- within me is my world The one outdoors is far too small.
