Sie singt
Language: German (Deutsch)

Wenn ich in meinem Bette lieg',
Draußen ist tiefe Nacht,
Werd' ich von seinem Arm gewiegt,
Bis ich die Augen zugemacht.
Oft singt er mir dann Liedlein vor,
Als wär' ich noch ein Kind,
Und Dinge tauchen empor,
Die lang vergessen sind:
Ein hohler Baum am Wege,
Ein Wasser unterm Stege,
Die große Weide vor der Stadt,
Die im Frühling so viele Kätzchen hat,
Trollblumen auf der Wiese
Und unsre schwarze Kuh, die [Lise]1.
Ich denke dann bei mir allein,
Ich werd' einmal so singen,
Der Mond sieht zu.
Mein Lied wird aber in zwei klein-
kleine Ohren dringen . . .
Du Liebe du!

She sings:
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When I lie in my bed,
Outside it is deep night,
I am rocked by his arm,
Until I have closed my eyes.
Often then he sings me a little song,
As if I were still a child,
And submerged things rise to the surface --
Long-forgotten things:
A hollow tree along the road,
A waterway under the path,
The great willow outside the city
That has so many catkins in springtime,
Globeflowers upon the meadow
And our black [source of] peace, Lise.
Then I think to myself
That I shall someday sing like that,
The moon looks on.
But my song shall fall into two little-
little ears . . .
You dear one, you!
