Sylkytän soittoa
liikutan laulua

kuuntelen iltaisin itseksein
hopeankirkasta kieltään.

Souatan säveltä
lempeni lasta
kasvaos kaunoisaksi:
elä mulle iloksi, sieluni suloksi
onneksi ainoaksi.

Oft singt er mir dann Liedlein vor,

Und Dinge tauchen empor,
Die lang vergessen sind:

Ein hohler Baum am Wege, 
Ein Wasser unterm Stege, 
Die große Weide vor der Stadt, 
Die im Frühling so viele Kätzchen hat,

Ich denke dann bei mir allein,

Du blühst wie die Julirosen, mehr Rosen als Blätter am roten Strauch.
Ich knie bei dir, dein Gärtner im Beet, die Sonne verbrennt ihn,
Doch pflegt er dich mit den verbrannten Händen.

Bin nur auf die Erde gekommen, weil du auf Erden bist, schöne Frau,
Bin nur auf der Erde geblieben, weil du die Erde so schön machst.
Deine Augen sind mir Flügel, sie tragen mich tief und tiefer in dein Herz.

Wer goß Wein in dein Haar, daß es duftet und scheint?
Dein Gang ist lautlos und leuchtend wie der Gang der Sternbilder;
Die Wärme deiner Augen geht dir voran. Hörst du, das Feuer nennt dich Herrin und Königin.
