Lange hab ich nun dem Regenlied gelauscht,
Tagelang und viele Nächte lang,
Wie es schwebend hängt und träumend rauscht,
Eingehüllt in ewig gleichen Klang.

Ähnlich klang mir einst im fernsten Reich
Der Chinesen gleitende Musik,
Heimchendünn und hoch und ewig gleich,
Doch voll Reiz in jedem Augenblick.

Regenrauschen und Chinesenlied,
Wasserfallmusik und Meeresklang,
Welche Macht ist's, die mich wieder zieht
Euren Zaubern nach die Welt entlang?

Eure Seele ist der ewige Ton,
Der nicht Zeit und der nicht Wechsel kennt,
Dessen Heimat wir vorzeit entflohn,
Dessen Nachklang uns im Herzen brennt.

J'ai longtemps écouté le chant de la pluie,
Durant des jours et durant bien des nuits,
Quand il flotte en suspens et bruisse en rêvant,
Éternellement enveloppé dans une même sonorité.

J'ai entendu un jour dans un lointain royaume
De telles sonorités dans la flottante musique chinoise,
Ténue comme le chant du grillon et haute et toujours pareille,
Et pourtant à chaque instant pleine d'attraits.

Bruissement de la pluie et chant de Chine,
Musique des cascades et son de la mer,
Quelle est cette force qui à nouveau m'attire
De par le monde vers votre enchantement ?

Votre âme est le son éternel
Qui ne connaît ni le temps ni le changement,
Dont nous avons fui le pays il y a bien longtemps,
Dont l'écho enflamme notre cœur.
