Re'n släckt är lampan i min flickas kammar,
Ett blekrött månsken blott på rutan flammar
Och genom slöjan, fäst för den, [jag ser]1
Den skönes bild ej mer.

Snart skall hon bäddens trygga fristad hinna;
Se'n, blyga Cynthia, bliv min spejarinna,
Och yppa vänligt hvad du skåda fått
För mig och natten blott.

Om med en blick, där himlen strålar åter,
Hon sammanknyter händerna och gråter
Och talar ord, som blott en ängel hör,
Sin aftonbön hon gör.

Men om den höljda barmen rörs och bäfvar,
Ett leende på rosenläppen sväfvar,
Och kindens låga sakta tänder sig,
Då drömmer hon om mig.

Serenade

Gelöscht das Licht in meines Liebchens Kammer,
ein blassrot Mondlicht spiegelt in der Scheibe,
und durch den Vorhang kann ich länger nicht
der Schönen Bild mehr sehn.

Bald wird sie Bettes sichre Zuflucht haben;
auf, scheue Cynthia1, du mögst für mich spähen
und offenbaren, was du durftest sehn,
nur mir und nur der Nacht.

Wenn sich in ihrem Blick der Himmel spiegelt,
und, leise weinend, sie die Hände faltet
und Worte spricht, die nur ein Engel hört,
spricht sie ihr Nachtgebet.

Doch wenn ihr Busen heimlich bebt und schaudert,
ein Lächeln schwebt auf ihren Rosenlippen
und ihre Wangen zart erröten, dann,
ja, dann träumt sie von mir.
