Und warten angstvoll, du und ich,
Wer wohl zuerst den Zauber bricht.

Wer wohl zuerst einhält im Takt
Und von sich weg die Lichter schiebt,
Und wer zuerst die Frage sagt,
Auf die es keine Antwort gibt.

De pâles éclairs embrasent la fenêtre,
Une couronne fanée orne le piano.

Toi le piano, moi le violon,
Nous jouons et ne nous arrêtons pas,
Et anxieux nous attendons, toi et moi,
Qui pourrait bien le premier briser le charme.

Qui le premier s'arrêtera en cadence
Et s'écartera de la lumière,
Et qui le premier posera la question
À laquelle on ne donne pas de réponse.
