Da draußen an der Halde,
Da singt ein Vöglein frei:
Jung Blut, geh' nicht zu Walde,
Im Walde wohnt die Fei.
Bei Tag im Grase funkelt
Ihr schuppiger Schlangenleib!
Doch wenn der Abend dunkelt,
Wird sie ein schönes Weib.
Sie sitzt in Mondscheinnächten
Am schwarzen See im Tann,
Und löst die langen Flechten,
Und lockt den Wandersmann.
Da blitzen ihr die Augen
Wie blauer Edelstein;
Ihre kalten Lippen saugen
Sein rothes Leben ein.
Es schallt wie Wonn' und Grausen
Ihr Lachen durch die Nacht,
Bis fern mit kühlem Sausen
Der Morgenwind erwacht.
Dann ächzt es in den Tannen,
Dann braust's im Wogenschlund;
Eine Schlange rauscht von bannen,
Eine Leiche liegt am Grund.

Au-dehors, sur le versant
Chante un libre oiseau :
Jeunesse, ne va pas dans la forêt,
Dans la forêt habite la fée.
Le jour, dans l'herbe étincelle
Son écailleux corps de serpent !
Mais lorsque brunit le soir,
Elle devient une belle femme.
Elle s'assoit la nuit au clair de lune
Dans la sapinière au bord du lac,
Défait ses longues tresses
Et attire les voyageurs.
Alors ses yeux brillent
Comme deux gemmes bleues ;
Ses froides lèvres sucent
Le sang de leur vie.
Son rire retentit dans la nuit,
Comme de délice et d'horreur
Jusqu'à ce que dans un froid bruissement
Le vent du matin s'éveille au-loin.
Et puis un gémissement dans le sapins
Et puis un mugissement dans le gouffre des ondes ;
Du sortilège un serpent frémit,
Un cadavre gît sur le sol
