Ach Bruder, bist gezogen
Fort in die blutge Schlacht,
Und tot in unsre Hütte
Wardst du zurückgebracht.

Oft, wenn ich bis zum Abend
Am See gesessen bin,
So leit ich meinen Nachen
Zu der Kapelle hin.

Dort knie ich in der Stille
Vor dem Mariabild,
Dann geh ich zu dem Grabe,
Darein man dich gehüllt.

Du hörst die Schwester nahen
Mit liebevollem Tritt
Und gibst mir frische Blumen
Für unsere Mutter mit.

Und wenn ich heimwärts schiffe,
Da ist mir wohl und leicht,
Als hätt die Heilge selber
Mir ihre Hände gereicht.

Doch wie des Sees Welle
Sich nie beruhigt stillt
Und immer wiederkehrend
Zu uns herüberquillt,

So werden meine Schmerzen
Von neuem stets erregt,
Bis mich der Kahn auf immer
An deine Seite trägt.

Hélas mon frère tu partis
Pour cette sanglante bataille
Et  dans notre chaumière
Tu fus ramené mort.

Lorsque je suis sur le lac,
Assise dans ma barque,
Souvent le soir je me dirige
Vers la chapelle.

Là-bas je m'agenouille dans le silence
Devant l'image de Marie,
Puis je vais sur la tombe 
Où tu fus enseveli.

Tu entends ta sœur s'approcher
D'un pas affectueux
Et tu me donnes des fleurs fraîches
À apporter à notre mère.

Et lorsque je retourne à la maison
Je me sens bien et apaisée,
Comme si la sainte elle-même
M'avait tendu la main.

Mais comme les vagues du lac
Qui jamais ne se calment,
Et revenant sans cesse
Arrivent jusqu'à nous,

Toujours ma douleur
À nouveau se réveillera,
Jusqu'à ce que pour toujours
Ma barque me porte à tes côtés.
