När kväll i själens himmel skymmer,
när livets sista stjärnljus rymmer
och själen vänder om på öde färden
och vill gå hem och har ej hem i världen...

O räddande försvar! o höga
och klara fäste i det svarta bruset:
o ljuva styrka uti ljuset,
heliga skönhet, av ditt öga!

sobald des Lebens letztes Sternlicht funkelt,
die Seele sich zur Schicksalsfahrt entschieden
und heimkehr’n will, und hat kein Heim hienieden …

Was mag als Schutz und Schild mir taugen,
Leuchtfeuer mir in schwarz’ Gebraus und Flimmern?
Die Stärke ist’s, die Süße in dem Schimmern,
die heil’ge Schönheit - deiner Augen!
