Was frag ich nach den Menschen
Und nach der lauten Stadt,
Wenn mich die Bergwaldwildnis,
Die weiße Stille hat. 

Die Buchenstämme stehen
So schwarz im weißen Schnee,
Seinen Schlafbaum sucht der Bussard,
Zu Felde zieht das Reh. 

Der Fuchs bellt unten im Grunde,
Die Eule gibt keine Ruh,
Der Abendwind rührt an den Zweigen,
Der Schnee fällt immerzu. 

Im Tale funkeln die Lichter,
Was kümmert mich ihr Schein,
Ich stehe oben am Hange
Und bleibe für mich allein.

Mitäpä minä ihmisistä välittäisin
tai kaupungin melusta,
kun metsäisten vuorten erämaassa
löydän valkean hiljaisuuden.
 
Pyökinrungot seisovat
niin mustina valkoisen lumen keskellä,
nukkumapuutaan etsi hiirihaukka,
vainiolle hakeutuu kauris.
 
Kettu haukahtelee alhaalla laaksossa,
pöllö ei anna rauhaa,
iltatuuli koskettaa oksia,
kaiken aikaa satelee lunta.
 
Laaksossa vilahtelee valoja,
mitäpä minä niistä välittäisin,
minä seison ylhäällä rinteellä
ja jään sinne aivan yksin.
