Jetzt wohl geht auf öden Wegen
er, der mir im Herzen lebt,
irrt in düster'n Waldgehegen,
wo kein Vogel singt und schwebt,
hört nur auf der Bäume Rauschen,
auf des Bächleins Murmelflut,
liebt nur, auf das Wild zu lauschen,
das dort im Verborg'nen ruht.

Mag ich hier am Fenster weilen
und hinaus nach ihm nur späh'n,
ach, ihn treibt's nicht, heim zu eilen,
bis sein blut'ges Werk gescheh'n.
Nur des Waldes Tier zu schlachten
ist's, was Lust dem Wilden gibt,
mag indes ein Herz verschmachten,
das ihn treu wie keines liebt.

Truce gioja! e me quì sola
