from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation Singable translation by Rosa Harriet Jeaffreson Newmarch (1857 - 1940)

Nieto, nieto v šírom svete milšieho
Language: Slovak (Slovenčina)
Nieto, nieto v šírom svete milšieho,
jako ja mám milovníka jedného.
Tri rôčky chodil ku mne,
sluboval, že ma vezme,
a odvrátil svoje srdce ode mne.

Kamže ty už, môj najmilší, chodieváš,
že ty na mňa zarmútenú zabúdáš.
Povedzže mi ešte raz,
či tvá láska je len špás?
Či ty mňa už zarmútenú tak necháš?

If thro' all the wide, wide world you...
Language: English  after the Slovak (Slovenčina)
If thro' all the wide, wide world you were to rove,
you would find no lad so dear as him I love.
Three long years he courted me,
promis'd we should married be,
then his fickle heart grew cold and would be free.

Tell me where you wander now, my own dear lad!
Tell me why you leave me here alone and sad!
Tell me, sweetheart, once again,
was your love a jest and vain,
will you ne'er come back to heal my aching pain?
