Geliebte Eltern! 's Jahr ist aus,
g'hört schon ins alte Eisen.
Ich möcht' so gern auf Urlaub z'Haus
und hab' kein Geld zum Reisen.

Bescher' euch Gott ein glücklich Jahr,
so euch als mir zum Segen;
er möge euch vor jeder G'fahr
beschützen allerwegen.

Ihr habt ja eurem lieben Sohn
noch nie 'was abgeschlagen,
d'rum schickt mir Geld, dann werd' ich schon
euch Weit'res mündlich sagen.

A son living abroad, to his parents

Dear parents! The year has come to an end,
it's on the scrap heap already.
I'm desperately longing for spending my holiday at home,
but I lack the money for the journey.

May God bestow upon you a happy year,
which were a bliss for you as well as for me;
may he save you from any trouble
at any time and at any place.

For sure you never have denied
anything to your dear son;
therefore send me money, the rest
I'll tell you when we meet again.
