by Christian Winther (1796 - 1876)

Naar Natten kaster sine Skygger
Language: Danish (Dansk)
Naar Natten kaster sine Skygger
Ud over tause Sø og Kyst,
Da kommer Sorgen bid og bygger
Sit Natteleie i mit Bryst.

Som Vedbend tæt til Stammen klynges,
Saa den gaaer ud og er forød,
Saa Sorgen ved mit Blod forynges
Og lever frodigt af min Død.

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Christian Winther, Lyriske Digte, C. A. Reitzel, Kbh., 1849, p. 88.

Modernized text:

Når natten kaster sine skygger
ud over tavse sø og kyst,
da kommer sorgen bid og bygger
sit natteleje i mit bryst.

Som vedbend tæt til stammen klynges,
så den går ud og er forød,
så sorgen ved mit blod forynges
og lever frodigt af min død.
