Hätt' er gewusst, welch' Seele er getroffen, den Schmerz geseh'n, der die Brust mir durchwühlt, und hätt' mein Herz, so voll von freud'gem Hoffen, ihm auszudrücken vermocht, was es fühlt, nicht hätte er so leicht sich mir entwunden, mir zu gehören wär' ihm süße Lust; er hätte warme Gegenlieb' empfunden, hätt' er's gewusst! Hätt' er gewusst, wie alles weiß zu bieten ein glühend Herz, ohne Falsch, treu und rein, durch mich hätt' er's erkannt, mich nicht gemieden, die Lieb' empfunden, die er flößte ein. Mein Auge barg verschämt das inn're Feuer; erriet er nicht den Sturm in meiner Brust? Ein solch Geheimnis, ihm unendlich teuer, hätt' er's gewusst. Hätt' ich gewusst, wie Zauber den umfangen, der sorglos liebend ins Auge ihm schaut, bezwungen hätte ich dies Glutverlangen, mich einem andern Himmel anvertraut. Nun ist's zu spät, mein Leben umzuwandeln, zerstört, was ich gehofft mit banger Lust; Wirst du nicht sagen: Nie konnt' ich so handeln, hätt' ich's gewusst?
Note for stanza 1, line 6, word 4: we have corrected a typo in the manuscript of Duval. The word must be "wär'" instead of "war"; the subjunctive is imperative here.
