O Ragna, hvor dog Tiden går,
forleden var du fire År
og dine Barneøjne så
så dybt på mig, så dunkelblå.

Indunder Fjeldesiden grå,
et Tjern, et drømmende jeg så,
hvor i jeg fandt slet ingen Bund,
da talend Tjernets Pigemund:

"Her nede drømmer Livet selv,
det næres af en rastløs Elv,
det stiger langsomt År for År,
tilsidst en Huldre for dig står!"

Hier encore, tu n'avais que quatre ans,
Et tes yeux d'enfant d'un bleu si sombre
Me regardaient profondément.

Sous le flanc gris de la montagne,
Je vis un petit lac rêveur,
Dont je ne pouvais trouver le fond.
alors la bouche de jeune fille du petit lac parla :

« Ici, au fond, la vie elle-même rêve.
Elle est nourrie par une rivière sans repos.
Elle monte lentement, année après année,
Jusqu'à ce qu'enfin une enchanteresse se tienne devant toi. »
