Прелестна песнь полуденной страны!
Она огнем живительным согрета, 
Как яркий день безоблачного лета;
Она сладка,  как томный свет луны, 
[Трепещущий на зеркале лагуны]1;
Все в ней к любви и неге нас манит, 
Но не звучат отзывно сердца струны, 
И мысль моя в груди безмолвной спит.
     
Другая песнь! то песнь родного края, 
Протяжная, унылая, простая, 
Тоски и слёз, и горестей полна.
Как много дум взбудила вдруг она
Про нашу степь про [звонкие метели]1, 
Про радости и скорби юных дней, 
Про тихие напевы колыбели, 
Про отчий дом и кровных, и друзей.
