Troff glitzernd von den Kieferstämmen nieder,
Ein Eichhorn sprang in keckem Wagemuth,
Aus klugen Äuglein blinzelnd, hin und wieder.
Vom Boden stieg ein herbes Duften auf,
Ein Falter flatterte vorbei wie trunken,
In regungsloser, tiefer Schweigsamkeit
Umstand der Tannengrund uns, traumversunken.
Und alles Fühlen, aller Lebensdrang
Auf uns gehäuft, vereinsamt in uns Beiden,
Und wir mit all' der Sehnsucht in der Brust,
So ganz allein in den durchsonnten Weiten.
Konnt's anders sein, als daß mein Haupt sich bog'
Um deinem Kuß die Lippen hin zu geben,
Daß ich ihn zitternd dir vom Munde trank,
Den Zaubertrank von Liebe, Lenz und Leben.

It was in the forest! The red gold of the sun
Dripped sparklingly down from the trunks of the pines,
Now and then, a squirrel hopped in audacious daring,
Blinking with intelligent little eyes.
From the ground a tangy scent arose,
A moth fluttered past as if intoxicated,
In deep, motionless quietness
The vale of firs surrounded us, sunken in dreams.
And all feeling, all urging of life
Heaped upon us, grows solitary within the two of us,
And we, with all the yearning in our breasts,
[Are] so utterly alone in the sun-filled expanses.
What else could have happened but that my head inclined
To offer up my lips to your kiss,
[The kiss] that I drank from your lips with trembling,
The magical potion of love, springtime, and life.
