Notre étoile
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  ENG
Nous étions heureux ensemble
Nous aimant sans en douter ;
Et quand l'amour nous rassemble,
Voici qu'il faut se quitter !
Mais pour que le temps se passe
Que nos coeurs aient dans l'espace
Comme un point de ralliement,
Et qu'une étoile discrète
A nos yeux chaque soir, prête
Son pâle scintillement.

Choisissons-la solitaire
Et modeste dans son coin,
Pour être les seuls sur terre
A la contempler de loin.
Et chacun à la même heure
Au seuil de notre demeure
Sans qu'on puisse le savoir,
Nous irons la nuit venue
Par sa lumière connue
Parler d'amour et nous voir.

Que notre étoile s'empresse
De luire en toute saison
Et jamais ne disparaisse
Au-dessous de l'horizon !
Si nous avons besoin d'elle
Que toujours, pure et fidèle,
Elle accompagne nos pas !
Et qu'importe si l'orage
Contre elle tourne sa rage
Elle ne s'éteindra pas !

Our star
Language: English  after the French (Français)
We were happy together,
Loving one another without any doubts;
And just when love has brought us together,
Now we must part!
But to make the time go by quickly,
May our hearts find a gathering point
Somewhere in space,
And may a discreet star
Lend its faint twinkling
To our eyes each night.

Let us choose one that is solitary
And modest, somewhere apart,
That we may be the only people on earth
To gaze upon it from afar.
And we both, at the same time,
At the doorways of our homes,
Having no way of knowing it,
Will go when night falls
By its well-known light
To speak of love and to see one another.

May our star hasten
To shine in all seasons;
May it never disappear
Below the horizon!
If we need it,
May it always accompany our steps,
Pure and faithful!
And what matter if a storm
Were to turn its rage upon our star?
It will not die away!
