Nacht

't Is zomernacht. De glinsterende stoeten
Der starren wijken rondom eindloos diep; -
't Was of de stilte plechtig tot mij riep:
‘Bid! op de starren rusten Godes voeten!’...
 
Ik weet, ik weet niet wie de wereld schiep,
Of ze is geschapen, of we aanbidden moeten,
Wat wij als leven, ziel of god begroeten, -
Of eeuwig slapen zal, wat eeuwig sliep! -
 
Daar tjuikt de nachtegaal zijn teeder lied,
Tevreden dat hij 't klagend lied mag zingen, -
Waarom hij zingt, dat weet de zanger niet;
 
Wat rusten kan, voelt zich de rust doordringen, -
Ook ik. Ik weet niet, wat ik denken moet,
Doch voel het: wie tevreden is, is goed.
