dei gamle Bakkar, dei gamle Kollar,
den gamle Stova, der eg var Barn!

Eg reiste fraa deg eg lite visste.
Og mykje vann eg; men meir eg miste:
Fekk gode Dagar med Mat og Klaede;
men tapte Uskuld og Tru og Glede
eg var for fegen, eg var for fjaag!

Ja, eg fekk röyna der uti Verdi:
Det Onde lurer, og tung er Ferdi.
Men no dei kverva dei saare Minne,
eg er so varm her i Hjarta inne,
no faer eg gjesta min Barneheim!

Ah, ici je vois les vieilles, vieilles fermes,
les vieilles montagnes et les vieux lacs.
Ah ici je vois les vieux champs,
les vieilles collines, les vieux sommets,
la vieille maison de mon enfance !

Je t’ai quittée, j’avais peu d’expérience.
J’ai beaucoup gagné mais j’ai perdu encore plus.
J’ai eu de bons jours, avec nourriture et vêtements,
mais j’ai perdu innocence, foi et joie ;
j’étais trop empressé, trop impatient !

J’ai fait des expériences dans le vaste monde :
le mal rode, et le voayage est pénible.
Mais maintenant les souvenirs douloureux s’estompent,
j’ai le cœur si chaleureux,
maintenant je reviens à la maison de mon enfance !
