In meines bulen gärtelein,
da lag ich da und schlief,
da träumte mir ein [Trämelein,
wie es]1 schneiet über mich.
Und da ich nun erwachte
und es war aber nicht;
Es waren die roten röselein,
die blüten über mich.
Ich brach mir die röslein abe
zu einem kranze,
Ich schickte sie meinem feinen lieb
zum lobetanze.
So baut ich mir ein häuselein
von petersilien;
Womit es war bedecket?
mit roten lilien.
Und da das haus gebauet war,
beschert mir gott ein weib,
Ein mägdel von achtzehn jaren,
der war gut wonen bei.

In my beloved's garden,
There I lay and slept,
There I dreamed a little dream
That it was snowing upon me.
And as I awakened then
It was not so;
It was the little red roses
That were blooming above me.
I picked the little roses
To twine a wreath,
I sent them to my dear love
For the engagement dance.
Thus I built myself a little house
Of parsley;
With what did I fashion the roof?
With red lilies.
And when the house was built,
God bestowed upon me a wife,
A maiden of eighteen years,
She was good to live with.
