Meine Geige hab ich um drei böhmische Gulden versetzt,
       was schiert mich das!
Hat mich dafür doch goldener Tokayer geletzt.
   Wirt, und fürder musst du kreiden!
   Was brauch ich Geige und Fiedelbogen!
       kann singen und pfeifen!
Sind mir nur die kleinen Mädel gewogen,
komm ich schon wieder zu Vesper und vollem Glas.
            Ei ja!
Von rotblühenden Lippen ein schwellender Kuss
ist fahrender Leute Zehrpfennig und Reisepass.

   Du zierliche Braune, magst mich leiden?
       Kleine, Feine, lass dich greifen!
   Wenn der Vollmond über die Kirche verzogen,
       will ich dich erwarten
   links bei der Pforte am Haselnuss
       unten im Garten:
   werd dir ein lustiges Stücklein pfeifen!
            Tralera . . . !
   Aber lass mich nicht vergebens warten!

I have pawned my violin for three Bohemian guilders,
       what does that matter to me!
For with the money a golden Tokaji wine slaked my thirst.
   Tavern-keeper, and the rest you must put on my tab!
   What do I need violin and fiddle bow!
       I can sing and whistle!
If the little girls look upon me kindly
I shall receive my evening meal and a full glass.
            Hey ho!
A swelling kiss from lips blooming red
is food allowance and passport for wayfaring folks.

   You delicate brunette, do you like me?
       Little one, fine one, let me catch you!
   When the full moon has moved past the church-roof
       I shall expect you
   to the left of the gate by the hazel
       down in the garden:
   I shall whistle you a merry little tune!
            Tralera . . . !
   But do not let me wait in vain!
