Pannonia and Noricum, Once the homeland of the Teutons, Was in olden times already conquered By the legions of the Romans; From the Rhine to the banks of the Danube The emperor Probus built ramparts And by the hand of warriors He had the first grapevines planted. Near Parendorf the grandchildren Of the Alemanni already found A bulbous thing, fashioned from fine clay, With an oversized handle. The inscription upon it clearly proved -- No scholar can deny it -- That Emperor Probus himself was Fond of sampling wine. Wine grapes were then cultivated By subsequent generations. -- -- He who wishes to be an honest man these days, May not be a scorner of wine; He must drink early, he must drink late, And [must] sing joyful tunes In order to praise the emperor’s cultured act In a German manner.
