Warum, mein Liebchen, sollt' ich nicht
nach Herzenslust dich küssen?
Es war ja Nacht, kein Auge sah's,
es kann's ja niemand wissen!

"Es sah'n die Augen ja der Nacht -
Mond, Sterne auf uns nieder;
ein Stern, der spiegelt sich im Meer
und sagt's dem Meere wieder.

Das Ruder hört's vom Meer und wird's
dem Schiffer hinterbringen,
und in der Früh' vor Liebchens Tür
hört man's den Schiffer singen!"
