Du Herbsttag wunderklar
So hold bewegt vom Windeshauch,
Aus tiefstem Herzensgrund empor;
Doch flieht drum nicht mein holdes Glück,
Noch schöner, schöner kehrt zurück,
So zart verklärt, mir Alles nur, was ich verlor.

You autumn day, wondrously clear
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
You autumn day, wondrously clear
And yet so mild and balmy,
How your sunny blue wondrously
Recalls to me the time of my youth,
The beautiful time, the beautiful time
With all its bliss,
So that I am happy again, completely and utterly.
Oh listen, how familiarly sounds
The ringing of the cow-bells,
Listen, how the singing of the cowherd lad
Echoes from the green hills!
And see the smoke of the meadow fire
So beautifully moved by a breath of wind,
Ah, how my heart then overflows with bliss.
Only, as the flowering of scent
Beautifies the ring of mountains,
The soft radiance of melancholy also rises gently
From out of the deepest depths of my heart;
But my lovely happiness does not depart thereby,
Only more beautifully, more beautifully, so gently transfigured,
Everything that once I lost returns to me.
