Au rivage de quelque eau douce d'Asie 
La maison de plaisance du Grand Mogol, 
Reflète ses perrons de girasol 
Dans les bassins où les cygnes s'extasient. 
Des princesses tartares au cœur méchant 
Écrasent des roses rouges sur leur bouche, 
Et le bruit silencieux de leurs babouches 
Fait se tromper les perruches dans leur chant. 
Des Jésuites envoyés du Roi de France, 
Sans descendre de leur riche palanquin, 
Discutent entre eux sur Saint Thomas d'Aquin 
En échangeant de courtoises révérences 
Avec un très vieux magot ventripotent 
Qui agite sans parler ses mains ridées 
Et qui porte une tunique où sont brodées 
Les guerres du Roi de Chine et du Sultan.
