Alt geworden bist Du, grünes Jahr,
Blickst schon welk und trägst schon Schnee im Haar,
Gehst schon müd und hast den Tod im Schritt-
Ich begleite Dich, ich sterbe mit.

Zögernd geht das [Herz den bangen]¹ Pfad,
Angstvoll schläft im Schnee die Wintersaat.
Wieviel Äste brach mir schon der Wind,
Deren Narben nun mein Panzer sind!
Wieviel bittere Tode starb ich schon!
Neugeburt war jedes Todes Lohn.

Sei willkommen, Tod, du dunkles Tor!
Jenseits läutet hell des Lebens Chor.

camines fatigat i la mort encalça els teus passos –
jo t’acompanyo, jo moriré amb tu.

Vacil·lant, el meu cor avança temorós pel camí,
ple de basarda dorm el sembrat sota la neu.
Quantes branques m’ha trencat el vent,
les cicatrius de les quals són ara la meva cuirassa!
Quantes morts amargues ja he hagut de patir!
Una renaixença era la recompensa de cada mort.

Benvinguda sigues, mort, tu obscura portalada!
En el més enllà sona clar el cor de la vida.
