Unter Rosen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wo die Rosenhecken sind,
sitzt des Burgwarts braunes Kind
hinter Wall und Graben.
Edelherren und stolze Fraun
sieht sie in die blühenden Aun
aus den Toren traben.
Lächelnd sitzt das braune Kind,
durch die junge Seele rinnt
wundersüss ein Märchen.
Ihre Augen schliesst ein Traum,
über ihr im Eschenbaum
singt ein Amselpärchen.
Leichte Schritte -- Späherblick --
Schlägt ein Rosenzweig zurück:
"Dass ich dich nun habe!"
Kommt ein blonder Sausewind,
und des Burgwarts braunes Kind
küsst der Edelknabe.

Under the roses
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Where the rose-hedges are,
there sits the olive-skinned child of the castle-custodian
behind the rampart and moat.
Noble lords and proud ladies
she sees riding out of the gates
into the blooming meadows.
The olive-skinned child sits smiling,
through her young soul trickles
a fairy-tale with wondrous sweetness.
A dream closes her eyes,
above her in the ash tree
A pair of blackbirds is singing.
Light steps -- a searching gaze --
A branch of roses is drawn aside:
"That I have you now!"
A blond wind rushes in,
and the olive-skinned child of the castle-custodian
is kissed by the noble lad.
