I felt so heavenly well in your presence, I did not know where my yearning had gone; My heart beat so joyfully, It seemed to me as if you loved me. A thousand times I ask myself: why? For you said not a word to me; And I, too, was so stupid and silent, Only sometimes I looked around for you. Then you would immediately lower your eyelids, And became as despondent as a child; Is this not how love feels? I would so gladly have asked you! We soon said farewell to each other, -- Ah! that the sweet hour trickled away! -- Then you gazed at me so soulfully Once more in parting. And I remained for a long time yet, And stood gazing dreamily; Is this how love makes one feel? I asked myself continuously. And now that I am once more far from you, I do not know where my heaven has gone; But ever, ever I tell myself: It seemed to me as if you loved me.
