Du hast so fromme Sitte
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Du hast so fromme Sitte,
Du hast so stille Weise,
Du kommst und grüßest freundlich
Und gehest wieder leise.

Und lächelst meinen Worten,
Die wirr und unstet schwanken;
Und hast mir doch bezwungen
Herz, Sinne und Gedanken.

Es haben mich geblendet
Gesenkte Augenlider,
Die Sprache stummen Mundes
Hallt mir im Traume wieder.

Confirmed with Richard Volkmann, Richard Leanders sämtliche Werke, Leipzig: Breitkopf und Härtel, 1899, page 220. Also confirmed with Richard v. Volkmann-Leander, Kleine Geschichten und Gedichte, Leipzig: Druck und Verlag von Philipp Reclam jun., 1920, page 47; the title comes from this collection.

You have such pious customs
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
You have such pious customs,
You have such a calm manner,
You come and speak a greeting amiably
And then leave quietly.

And smile at my words
That falter confusedly and erratically;
And yet you have conquered
My heart, senses and thoughts.

I have been blinded by
Lowered eyelids,
The words of a mute mouth
Reverberate in my dreams.
