Reiner atmet der Garten im Tau der Nacht,
Stiller brandet vom Tale die Stadt herauf,
Blumen schimmern im Dunkeln
Geisterhaft blaß wie aus Träumen her.

Mir allein, der ich müde der Sonne bin,
Kühlt auch der Abend die brennende Stirne nicht,
Mir verschmachten die Sinne
Dürstender als am Tage noch.

Ungestillt verzehrt mich die Leidenschaft,
Die ich des Tags mit so viel Listen betrog,
Ach nun steht sie verzweifelt
Aus der kurzen Betäubung auf.

Liebe atmet der Baum und Liebe der Mond,
Liebe träumen die Blumen im schwarzen Laub,
Nur ich Einsamer dürste
Ungeliebt in der lachenden Welt.

Mädchen bleiben und Männer bezaubert stehn,
Wenn durchs Gebüsch meine einsame Laute tönt,
Und in Liedern verblutet
Statt in Liebesarmen mein Herz.

El poeta

El jardí alena més pur en el rou de la nit,
més tranquil arriba des la vall el brogit de la ciutat,
les flors resplendeixen en la foscor
amb una pal·lidesa fantasmal, com eixides d’un somni.

Tan sols a mi, que estic cansat del sol,
la frescor del vespre no em refreda el front ardent,
els meus sentits s’esllangueixen
encara més assedegats que durant el dia.

Insatisfet, la passió em devora,
durant el dia l’he enganyat amb tantes astúcies,
ai, ara sorgeix desesperada
d’un breu atordiment.

Amor alena l’arbre i amor alena la lluna,
amor somien les flors en l’ombriu fullatge,
només jo, solitari, sedejo
sense amor en el món que se’n riu.

Les donzelles s’aturen i els homes s’encisen
quan a través dels matolls sona el meu llaüt,
i en cançons es dessagna el meu cor
en lloc de fer-ho en els braços de l’amor.
