Des Jägers Pfeil im schlanken Halse, sprengt
Der Hirsch dem Tod entgegen.
An seinen Flanken hängt
Die hündische Meute.
Es trieft aus ihren Mäulern schnöde Gier
Nach der gehetzten Beute.
Schon lischt des Auges Licht.
Da bäumt sich einmal noch das edle Tier
Empor, daß es noch einmal auf vertrauten Wegen,
Eh es zusammenbricht,
Der Freiheit Luft, des Adlers Flug umsause;
Dann stürzt es sterbend in das Waldgebrause.

La flèche du chasseur dans son svelte cou,
Le cerf saute à la rencontre de la mort.
À son côté s'accroche
La meute des chiens.
De leurs gueules dégouline une méprisable avidité
Pour la proie pourchassée.
Déjà s'éteint la lumière de ses yeux
Et le noble animal se cabre encore une fois
Pour qu'encore une fois sur le chemin familier,
Avant de s'écrouler,
L'air de la liberté, le vol de l'aigle bruisse autour de lui ;
Puis il s'abat, mourant, dans le mugissement de la forêt.
