by Emanuel von Geibel (1815 - 1884)

O weißt du, was den wilden Schwan
Language: German (Deutsch)
O weißt du, was den wilden Schwan
Treibt übers Meer in südlich Land,
Was aus dem Schacht zum Licht hinan
Das Bächlein zwingt durch Kies und Sand?
Kannst du es sagen:
Dann magst du fragen,
Was mich an deine Schritte bannt.

Dann magst du fragen auch, warum
Dies Auge brennt, das stets gelacht,
Warum der kecke Mund ward stumm.
Kein Becher mehr mich fröhlich macht,
Warum in Sorgen
Mich trifft der Morgen
Und schlaflos die gestirnte Nacht.

Ich weiß nur das: Trüb oder froh,
Ein Schicksal ist's, ich gab mich drein;
In meinen Sternen flammt' es so,
Und Lieb' ist Lieb' in Lust und Pein.
Drum duld' es stille,
Daß all mein Wille
Um dich sich dreht: Nimm hin, was dein!
