by Vasile Alecsandri (1821 - 1890)
Translation by Josef Wiedemann (1828 - 1919)

Noaptea profundă
Language: Romanian (Română)
Noaptea profundă
In ea cufundă
Pământul june, reinflorit,
Bolta senină
Blândă lumină
Varsă din sânul sau aurit.

Şi totul tace
Divină pace
Peste natură domneşte lin,
Dar o furtună
Geme şi tună
In al meu suflet sdrobit de chin.

Ah! nici e rază
Nu luminează
Noaptea profundă ce m'a cuprins,
Inima-i ruptă
De lunga luptă
Ce-amor şi ură crud au incins!

Nacht
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Romanian (Română)
Nächtliches Rauschen,
heimliches Lauschen,
stille die Welt, ein riesiges Grab;
magisch im Dunkeln
glühen und funkeln
glänzende Sterne leuchtend herab.

Bangendes Schweigen,
träumerisch neigen
dunkelnde Schatten zum Tal sich hin,
feindlich doch walten
wüste Gestalten,
stürmen den liebegequälten Sinn.

Freundlicher Schimmer
leuchtet nun immer
mild durch die Nacht, die tief mich umfängt.
Ewige Trauer,
frostiger Schauer
grausam das arme Herz mir bedrängt.
