Vom weissen Rösslein schied ein Knab,
Es zog ihn in die Weite.
Der Wirthin blonde Tochter gab
Dem Wandrer das Geleite.
Und als er um die Ecke bog
Auf Nimmerwiederkehren, 
Die Magd ihr Linnentüchlein zog
Und trocknete die Zähren.

"Es treibt dich fort von Land zu Land 
Zu wandern und zu schweifen.
Du trägst an deiner rechten Hand 
Von Golde einen Reifen.
Darinnen sitzt ein Blutrubin,
Der leuchtet wie ein Funken. -- 
O weh, ich liess dich weiter zieh'n,
Eh' du den Ring vertrunken."
