Jeg bærer med Smil min Byrde,
jeg drager med Sang mit Læs,
jeg er som den vilde Hyrde,
der genner sit Kvæg på Græs.

Se Duggen driver fra Norden
hen over det bøjede Korn,
mens Solen stiger af Jorden
imellem Oksernes Horn.

Jeg ser over tindrendeMarker
og langt mod den blånende Fjord,
jeg stirrer på sejlende [Arker]1,
men finder ej tolkende Ord.

Jeg slænger Skalmejen for Munden;
jeg trækker så langt dens Lyd,
at Kilderne klukker i Lunden,
og Bukkene bræger af Fryd.

Hvor kan I dog gruble og græde,
så længe Guds Himmel so blå!
Mit Hjerte skælver af Glæde,
blot Duggen [dynker]2 et Strå.

Cœur léger

Je porte mon fardeau avec le sourire,
je tire ma charretée en chantant,
je suis comme le berger farouche
qui pousse son bétail vers l'herbage.

Voyez, la rosée vient du nord
par-dessus les blés courbés,
et le soleil monte au-dessus de la terre
au milieu des cornes des bœufs.

Je vois au-delà des champs lumineux,
au loin, en direction du fjord bleu,
et je [contemple les bateaux à voile]1,
mais ne sais comment l'exprimer.

Je vagabonde, le chalumeau à la bouche ;
je porte si loin sa musique
que les sources glougloutent dans le bocage
et que les boucs bêlent de joie.

Comment pouvez-vous donc vous interroger et pleurer,
alors que le ciel de Dieu est si bleu !
Mon cœur est gonflé de joie
à la simple pensée que la rosée mouille un brin d'herbe.
