The "cyclops" variety of violet is wonderfully easy to force. Coloured a beautiful solferino-red, it has a strong scent, blooms early and is hardy.

Fritillaries prefer sunny sites, protected from winds and from springtime frosts. In the winter they should be covered. They are also known as "lapwing eggs" and "imperial crowns."
