2. Grindelwald

Schon manche selige Nacht hat über mir geblaut, Doch so wie heut hab ich die Sterne nie geschaut. Die Berge stehen steil mit schroffer Stirn, Ein leises Leuchten geht von Firn zu Firn. Darüber ausgespannt träumt wunderbar Der nahe Himmel rein und sternenklar. Mit mächtigen Lichtern, schweigsam, reich und mild Reiht sich in seligem Reigen Bild an Bild. Ein großer Friede wacht ob ihrem Kranz Und füllt die Seele mir mit kühlem Glanz. So daß das Leben, das weit abwärts treibt Mir nur ein halbvergessenes Gestern bleibt.

Ein starker Geist hält seine weiße Hand Weit über seine Berge ausgespannt. Groß ist das Leuchten seines Angesichts, Ich aber fürcht' ihn nicht: er tut mir nichts. In schwarzen Schlüften hab' ich ihn gespürt, Auf hohen Gipfeln sein Gewand berührt. Ich hab ihn oft aus leisem Schlaf geweckt Und zwischen Tod und Leben frech geneckt. Und stundenlang, wenn ich im Herzen litt, Ging er auf Gletscherwegen leise mit Und legte gütig seine kühle Hand Auf meine Stirne, bis ich Frieden fand.
