Ich kenn' ein wildes Röschen, Das blüht so rot im Dornenstrauch, Das lockt so lieb mit süßem Hauch, Das sucht mit scharfen Spitzen Oft mir die Hand zu ritzen - [Das Blut]1 ist kaum zu stillen: Doch um der Rose willen Lieb' ich die Dornen auch. Und hat sie mich gestochen, Dann blickt sie mich so freundlich an, Als hätt' sie mir nicht weh getan; Und schaut' ich noch so wilde - Sie duftet lieblich milde. Zuletzt, was will ich machen? Ich muß von Herzen lachen Und bleib' ihr zugetan.

Bist du aus jener anderen Welt Als freundliches Zeichen entboten, Daß einst im Frieden des Schönen Das Leben sich werde versöhnen? Geisterhauch sächelt da Gräberfeld: Selig, selig die Todten.
