Nun ziehen Nebel, falbe Blätter fallen,
Öd alle Stellen, die uns oft entzücket!
Und noch einmal tief' Rührung uns beglücket,
Wie aus der Flucht die Abschiedslieder schallen.
 
Wohl manchem blüht aus solchem Tod Gefallen:
Daß er nun eng ans blühnde Herz gedrücket,
Von roten Lippen holdre Sträuße pflücket
Als Lenz je beut mit Wäldern, Wiesen allen.
 
Mir sagte niemals ihrer Augen Bläue:
"Ruh auch aus! Willst du ewig sinnen?"
Und einsam sah ich so den Sommer fahren.
 
So will ich tief des Lenzes Blüte wahren,
Und mit Erinnern zaubrisch mich umspinnen,
Bis ich nach langem Traum erwach im Maie.
