Auf ferner fremder Aue
Da liegt ein todter Soldat,
Ein ungezählter, vergess'ner,
Wie brav er gekämpft auch hat.

Es reiten [viel Generale]1
Mit Kreuzen an ihm vorbei;
Denkt keiner, daß der da lieget,
Auch werth eines Kreuzleins sei.

Es ist um manchen Gefall'nen,
Viel [Frag']2 und Jammer dort,
Doch für den armen Soldaten
[Gibt's weder Thräne]3 noch Wort. -

Doch ferne, wo er zu Hause,
Da [sitzt]4, beim Abendroth,
Ein Vater voll banger Ahnung,
Und sagt: »Gewiß, er ist todt!«

Da sitzt eine weinende Mutter,
Und schluchzet laut: »Gott helf'!
»Er hat sich angemeldet:
»Die Uhr blieb steh'n um Elf!«

Da starrt ein blasses Mädchen
Hinaus [in's]5 Dämmerlicht:
»Und ist er dahin und gestorben,
»Meinem Herzen stirbt er nicht!« -

Drei Augenpaare schicken,
So heiß [es ein]6 Herz nur kann,
Für den armen, todten Soldaten
Ihre Thränen zum Himmel hinan.

Und der Himmel nimmt die Thränen
In einem Wölkchen auf,
Und trägt es zur fernen Aue
Hinüber [im raschen]7 Lauf;

Und [gießet]8 aus der Wolke die Thränen
Auf's Haupt des Todten als Thau,
Daß er unbeweint nicht liege
Auf [ferner, fremder]9 Au.
