Die heil'gen drei Kön'ge aus Morgenland,
Sie frugen in jedem Städtchen:
Wo geht der Weg nach Bethlehem,
Ihr lieben Buben und Mädchen?

Die Jungen und Alten, sie [wußten es]1 nicht,
Die Könige zogen weiter;
Sie folgten einem goldenen Stern,
Der leuchtete lieblich und heiter.

Der Stern blieb stehn über Joseph's Haus,
Da sind sie [hineingegangen]2;
Das Öchslein brüllte, das Kindlein schrie,
Die heil'gen drei Könige sangen.

Les trois rois mages de l'Orient
Demandaient dans chaque bourgade :
« Chers garçons et filles
Quelle est la route de Bethléem ? »

Ni les vieux ni les jeunes ne le savaient ,
Les rois poursuivaient leur chemin ;
Ils suivaient une étoile d'or,
Qui brillait, douce et sereine.

L'étoile s'arrêta au-dessus de la maison de Joseph,
Et là ils sont entrés ;
Le petit bœuf beuglait, le petit enfant criait,
Les trois rois mages chantaient.
