Ihre weißen Rößlein trugen
[Güldnes]4 Hirschgeweih und flogen
Rasch dahin, wie wilde [Schwänenzüge]5
Kam es durch die Luft gezogen.
 
Lächelnd nickte mir die Kön'gin,
Lächelnd, im [Vorüberreuten]6.
Galt das meiner neuen Liebe,
Oder soll es Tod bedeuten?

Nella foresta, al chiaro di luna,
ho visto poco fa gli elfi cavalcare;
ho sentito suonare i loro corni,
le loro campanelle ho sentito squillare.

I loro bianchi cavallini portavano
corna d'oro di cervo e volavano
rapidi là, come bianchi cigni
trainati attraverso l'aria.

Sorridendo mi salutò la regina,
sorridendo, nel passare a cavallo.
Che sia il mio nuovo amore,
o deve significare la morte?
