Return to the original list

1. Mit deinen blauen Augen  [sung text not yet checked]
by Ludwig Ebert (1834 - 1908), "Mit deinen blauen Augen", op. 14 (Drei Lieder von H. Heine) no. 1 [ high voice and piano ], unpublished
Language: German (Deutsch)
  Mit deinen blauen Augen
Siehst du mich [lieblich]1 an,
Da ward mir so träumend zu Sinne,
Daß ich nicht sprechen kann.

  An deinen blauen Augen
Gedenk' ich allerwärts: --
Ein Meer von blauen Gedanken
Ergießt sich über mein Herz.

1. Avec tes yeux bleus
Language: French (Français)
Avec tes yeux bleus,
Tu me regardes délicieusement
Et alors, pris de rêveries
Je ne puis parler.

À tes yeux bleus
Je pense partout :
Un océan de pensées bleues
Se déverse sur mon cœur.

2. Ja, mein gar zu dunkles Leben  [sung text not yet checked]
by Ludwig Ebert (1834 - 1908), "Ja, mein gar zu dunkles Leben", op. 14 (Drei Lieder von H. Heine) no. 3 [ high voice and piano ], unpublished
Language: German (Deutsch)
In mein gar zu dunkles Leben
Strahlte einst ein süßes Bild;
Nun das süße Bild erblichen,
Bin ich gänzlich nachtumhüllt.

Wenn die Kinder sind im Dunkeln,
[Wird]1 beklommen ihr Gemüth,
Und um ihre Angst zu bannen,
Singen sie ein lautes Lied.

Ich, ein tolles Kind, ich singe
Jetzo in der Dunkelheit;
[Ist]2 das Lied auch nicht ergötzlich,
Hat's mich doch von Angst befreit.

Confirmed with Heinrich Heine, Buch der Lieder, Die Heimkehr, Hamburg, Hoffmann und Campe, 1827, page 177. Note: modern German would change the spelling of "Gemüth" to "Gemüt". Note: in the Schott edition of Rudersdorff's song, stanza 2, line 1, word 2 is "sie", not found in the autograph.

1 Rudersdorff: "Ist"
2 Spring: "Klingt" (also found in later editions of Heine)

by Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856)
2. Dans ma vie bien trop sombre
Language: French (Français)
Dans ma vie bien trop sombre
Brilla un jour une douce image;
Maintenant, cette douce image estompée,
Je suis tout enveloppé de nuit.

Quand les enfants sont dans le noir,
Ils ont l'âme angoissée,
Et pour éloigner leurs peurs
Il chantent une chanson a voix haute.

Moi, fol enfant , je chante
Aussi dans l'obscurité;
Si ma chanson n'est pas aussi délicieuse,
Elle m'a au moins libéré de la peur.
