Herab so bang und schwer,
Wir beide traurig gingen
Im Garten hin und her.

So ganz, wie unsre Liebe,
Zu Tränen nur gemacht.

Und als ich mußte scheiden
Und gute Nacht [dir]4 bot,
Wünscht' ich bekümmert beiden
Im Herzen uns den Tod.

En lichtloos was de nacht,
Precies als onze liefde
Die niets dan tranen bracht.
 
En toen ik moest vertrekken
En jou 'Vaarwel' aanbood,
Wenst' ik in 't hart wanhopig
Ons beiden toe de dood.

Doch leise weht das Schilf und wiegt 
Das Haupt mit leichtem Sinn;
Ein blauer Falter aber fliegt
Darüber einsam hin!

Het meer rust diep in blauwe droom,
Met waterbloemen gans bedekt;
O vogels in de sparrenboom,
Zorg dat je niet de slaper wekt!
 
Maar zachtjes waait het riet en wiegt
Zijn pluimen heel sereen;
Een blauwe vlinder echter vliegt
Daar eenzaam overheen.
