Hörtest du denn nicht hinein,
Daß Musik das Haus umschlich?
Nacht war schwer und ohne Schein,
Doch der sanft auf hartem Stein
Lag und spielte, das war ich.

Was ich konnte, sprach ich aus:
"Liebste du, mein Alles Du!"
Östlich brach [ein]1 Licht heraus,
Schwerer Tag trieb mich nach Haus,
Und mein Mund ist wieder zu.

Que de la musique entourait la maison ?
La nuit était lourde et sans lumière,
Pourtant l'être doux qui jouait
Étendu sur une dure pierre, c'était moi.

Je m'exprimais comme je pouvais :
« Toi ma très chère, Toi qui m'es tout ! »
À l'est une lumière s'allumait,
Un triste jour me ramena à la maison,
Et ma bouche est à nouveau fermée.

War der Himmel trüb und schwer,
Waren einsam wir so sehr,
Voneinander abgeschnitten!
Aber das ist nun nicht mehr:
Lüfte fließen hin und her;
Und die ganze Welt inmitten
Glänzt, als ob sie gläsern wär.

Sterne kamen aufgegangen,
Flimmern mein - und deinen Wangen,
Und sie wissens auch:
Stark und stärker wird ihr Prangen;
Und wir atmen mit Verlangen,
Liegen selig wie gefangen,
Spüren eins des andern Hauch.

Le ciel était trouble et lourd,
Nous étions si esseulés,
Coupés l'un de l'autre !
Mais maintenant ce n'est plus le cas :
Les vents se glissent ici et là ;
Et entre eux le monde entier
Brillait, comme s'il était en verre.

Les étoiles commençaient à se lever,
À faire luire mes joues et les tiennes,
Elles le savaient bien :
Leur brillant était de plus en plus puissant ;
Notre respiration emplie de désirs,
Nous étions comme captifs de l'extase,
Chacun sentait le souffle de l'autre.
