Ich bin auch in Ravenna gewesen, Ist eine kleine, tote Stadt, Die Kirchen und viel Ruinen hat, Man kann davon in den Büchern lesen. Du gehst hindurch und schaust dich um, Die Straßen sind so trüb und naß Und sind so tausendjährig stumm, Und überall wächst Moos und Gras! Das ist wie alte Lieder sind, Man hört sie an und keiner lacht Ein jeder lauscht und jeder sinnt Hernach daran bis in die Nacht.

Jo també he estat a Ravenna, és una petita ciutat morta, que té esglésies i moltes ruïnes, que hom pot llegir als llibres. Tu hi passes a través i esguardes l’entorn, els carrers són tan llòbrecs i humits i muts des de fa mil·lenis, i arreu hi creixen molses i herbes! És com les velles cançons, hom les escolta i ningú riu, i cadascú para l’orella i cadascú hi pensa més tard fins a la nit.

Corren les hores – mitjanit! Al cel no hi ha lluna, ni estrelles, guarda’ns en el nostre viatge, Madona, mare del nostre Senyor! Corren les hores. El banc d’esculls és a prop. Madona, governa tu el vaixell a través de la tempesta i la mitjanit vers el port i el nostre país! Corren les hores sense aturall. Madona de la misericòrdia, tu que donares a llum el Senyor, ajuda’ns a trobar un dia l’etern repòs!

En un marcat compàs canta el mar, el xafogós vent de ponent udola i somriu, vents de tempesta passen rabent, negres i feixucs; no se’ls pot veure, és massa de nit. A mi però em sembla que, talment morta i anguniosa, talment sense conhort ni bona estrella, a través de nits xafogoses i cant de tempestes, ha transcorregut també la meva vida. I tanmateix, no hi ha cap nit tan negra ni cap viatge tan ple de foscúria que, al apropar-se el matí, no albiri el dolç averany de la llum.

Meine Segel sind entschlafen In der warmen Mittagsglut, Meine Wünsche sind im Hafen Und mein Ruder ruht. Starkes, wunderliches Leben! Meine Stirn hast du versengt, Stürme hast du mir gegeben Und mich aus der Bahn gedrängt. Trotzig hast du mich im Sturm gefunden, Spottend sah ich dir ins Angesicht; Doch dem Zauber deiner Feierstunden, Deiner Koselieder widersteh ich nicht. Träumend hängt mein Blick am Himmelsbogen, Wo ein Wolkenflug sich seewärts schwingt, Träumend lausch ich auf den Chor der Wogen, Der mir Frieden in die Seele singt. Tu has abrusat el meu front, m’has donat tempestes i m’has fet sortir del camí. Obstinat, m’has trobat en la tempesta, burleta, he mirat el teu rostre; però l’encís de les teves hores de festa, els teus cants afalagadors, no els puc resistir. Somiejant, el meu esguard resta suspès a l’arc del cel, on un vol de núvols es mou cap el mar, somiejant, escolto el cor de les ones que canten la pau a la meva ànima.
